Rabbi Yaakov Dov Bleich, Chief Rabbi of Ukraine and Kyiv, will officiate at a dedication ceremony for the first Jewish prayer room at Babyn Yar Synagogue's Holocaust Memorial Center (BYHMC).
According to Rabbi Bleich, "This area was the place where the Germans believed they could construct a 'Judenrein' Kyiv—a city 'cleansed' of its Jews." "The triumph of the Jewish people over their oppressors is shown by the fact that we can construct a monument here that depicts a synagogue."

For the victims and survivors, he said today's generation has a heavy obligation to relay the narrative of the Holocaust to the next generation. To ensure that tangible monuments that convey the tale are erected, "we must do all we can now."
Babyn Yar Synagogue architecture proved challenging for architect Herz when it came to Babyn Yar.
I had to approach this assignment with utmost care and respect since Babyn Yar is one of the most gruesome sites globally.
Babyn Yar Synagogue by Manuel Herz Architects was inspired by the pop-up book and the wooden synagogues of the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Ukraine. Opened manually, the building transforms into the three-dimensional synagogue structure as a flat structure. A tragic past and a hopeful future come together in Herz's design.

While honouring the tragic past, I also wanted to create something that could open a new path for the Jewish community in the area, one that might even bring a smile to someone's face. My goal was to design a structure that would pay tribute to the tragedy of the past while also pointing to the site's bright future.
It is likened to the idea that reading a prayer book or Bible in the synagogue is like "opening up a whole universe of magical values and history," as expressed by Rabbi Herz. Herz argues that a sense of cohesion and unity will be essential in the future if individuals have to open the pop-up synagogue manually.
According to Babyn Yar Historical Museum Artistic Director Ilya Khrzhanovsky, it is notable since the synagogue is the museum's first open structure. Eighty years later, there remained practically nothing to remind visitors of this catastrophe. There was no place to worship or discuss anything personal and significant about this shattered and slaughtered planet. The synagogue, he went on to say, is essential for individuals of diverse backgrounds. People who have no prior knowledge of Judaism may learn about Jewish life in Ukraine before World War II via the exhibits."

For Khrzhanovsky, it is particularly poignant that the synagogue will be dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day. A "symbolic significance" is added by the fact that "the individuals who were slaughtered there never saw the nation (Israel)."
To Sum It Up
With the youngsters, we got things going. Because it attracted young people into synagogues, this had an incredible ripple impact on their parents and communities. He remarked that the only way we will have a future is to bring children into the temple, recalling when the synagogue in Kyiv was devoid of children.
Even though there will be no regular Jewish congregation in Babyn Yar Synagogue Ukraine
, the symbolic synagogue serves as an emblem for the return of Jewish life in Ukraine, symbolised by the symbolic temple and prayer space dedicated in Kyiv on this day, according to Rabbi Bleich.
